Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been widely used in various applications due to its unique properties, notably its high heat resistance and tensile strength. It consists of a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals, each characterised by their fibrous crystalline structures. This fibrous composition makes asbestos materials durable and effective as insulating agents.

Asbestos Information

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of fine, durable fibres resistant to heat, electricity, and chemical corrosion. These qualities made it a popular material in construction and manufacturing throughout the 20th century. However, its use has declined sharply due to its serious health risks.

The fibres of asbestos are microscopic and, when disturbed, can become airborne and inhaled. Once inside the lungs, these fibres can cause long-term health problems, including lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma.

Types of Asbestos

There are six recognised types of asbestos:

Chrysotile (White Asbestos) • Amosite (Brown Asbestos) • Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos) • Tremolite, Actinolite, and Anthophyllite

Where Can Asbestos Be Found?

Asbestos was widely used in domestic and commercial properties before its risks were understood. It can still be present in buildings constructed or refurbished before 2000.

Dangers of Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos fibres is the primary cause of several life-threatening conditions, including:

  • Mesothelioma: A rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen.
  • Asbestosis: Chronic scarring of lung tissue.
  • Lung Cancer: Often indistinguishable from cancers caused by smoking.
  • Pleural Thickening: A non-cancerous condition that thickens the lining of the lungs, causing breathlessness.

The risk increases with prolonged exposure or if the material is damaged or disturbed, releasing fibres into the air.
